Tempted to trim security? There are a million reasons why you shouldn't!
Right now, poor security is a big problem. Conflict in the Gulf has driven up the price of gold, precious metals, and high-value watches – fuelling a dramatic rise in organised crime targeting jewellers.
In the first five months of 2026 alone, Safer Gems reported that there were 29 robberies/smash & grab raids across the UK, 17 involving weapons, with £4.5 million worth of valuables stolen. That's a 183% increase in armed attacks compared to the entirety of 2025.
The damage extends beyond property. Staff are hurt – physically and psychologically. Only last year, a jeweller's manager took his own life as a direct result of a robbery. Businesses also face growing compensation claims from staff and customers caught in the crossfire.
Now is not the time to reduce security. As we enter the busy summer season and look forward to Christmas, organised criminals continue to stake out targets. Vigilance is vital to avoid becoming yet another victim!
Jewellers need a layered, intelligence-led approach – integrating highly trained personnel, robust procedures, and situational awareness. Your security team are your frontline risk managers. Anything less, and you risk making yourself a target.
